also surrendered three runs in those innings. But then he battled through three more innings, throwing ultimately 110 pitches, and keeping the Twins at bay. He did what Tigers pitching has done all year long, which is to minimize the damage and keep the Tigers offense within striking distance of the lead.

Speaking of that offense, the Tigers again put up four runs or more, something they have done in four of their six wins. Today Andrew Romine led the way, clubbing a 2-out grand slam into the cheap seats in right field — the first grand slam of his career. Tyler Collins also pitched in with an RBI single earlier in the fourth inning.

The much maligned bullpen did an outstanding job today in relief, pitching 3 innings of shut-out baseball. Kyle Ryan and Alex Wilson took control of the Twins lineup who didn’t much threaten, until the ninth. In the ninth Wilson walked two twins hitters with two outs. However, he closed the door when Eduardo Escobar flew out to centerfielder Andrew Romine — earning Wilson his first save this season, and flying the Tigers to the top of the American League Central standings.

Looking Ahead:

Tomorrow the Tigers wrap up their series with the Twins at 1:10 EST. Jordan Zimmermann will take the bump opposite Phil Hughes. In his last start, Zimmermann went six innings and limited the damage of seven hits resulting in just one earned run. The Tigers will look to extend their current three-game winning streak and then welcome the Cleveland Indians to town for the weekend.
