Answers. That is what the Detroit Red Wings are once again searching for after a dismal performance in game three that put them in a 2-1 series deficit. The Anaheim Ducks are in town once again for game four of this best of seven series that has become a must win game for the Red Wings. A loss, and the Red Wings season will be on the brink of ending in Anaheim Wednesday night.

The crowd at Joe Louis Arena was crazy and pumped up for game three after the Red Wings were able to earn a split and home ice advantage in Anaheim. A close first period kept the crowd at the Joe buzzing. The first few minutes of the second period remained close until the turning point of the game and perhaps the whole series when Justin Abdelkader laid a massive hit on Anaheim’s Toni Lydman that earned Abdelkader a five minute major and a game misconduct. Anaheim was able to score the go ahead goal only 28 seconds into the man advantage which seemed to transfer all of the momentum to their side. Anaheim was able to strike again and essentially put the nail in the coffin when Ryan Getzlaf added a short handed goal six and a half minutes into the third period. One more powerplay goal and an even strength goal sealed the Red Wings fate as Anaheim went on to win 4-0 and take the 2-1 series lead. The Red Wings were only able to muster 23 shots on Hiller in the whole game, a number that must go up if the Red Wings are able to create any offense tonight.

Not only did the Red Wings lose Abdelkader for the remainder of game three, they lost him for games four and five as well as Brendan Shannahan’s office handed down a two game suspension for the hit that caused Lydman to miss at least game four. If the Red Wings don’t straighten out the ship tonight or Wednesday, Abdelkader’s season could be done.

The Red Wings will turn to Jimmy Howard in net once again after a disappointing performance in game three. Howard’s play has been sub-par this series after finishing the season strong. In the three games, Howard has allowed 11 goals after allowing only three in his final four games of the regular season.

Detroit Red Wings should be elated for a full season of Jakub Vrána

The Ducks will remain with Jonas Hiller in net after he earned the shutout in game three. Hiller has played very well this series in the two Ducks victories giving up only one goal in the two wins. In the one loss of the series, he gave up five goals so the Ducks are hoping for another strong performance from Hiller.

With Abdelkader being suspended, Mikael Samuelsson will take his place on the top line alongside Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Todd Bertuzzi will take Abdelkader’s spot in the lineup and there will be no new changes on the defensive front.

Players To Watch:

  • Mikael Samuelsson takes a spot on the top line along Datsyuk and Zetterberg so he will get opportunities to score goals and contribute offensively. Abdelkader was pretty successful on a line with Datsyuk, so it will be important for Samuelsson to contribute at least at the level that Abdelkader would be able to
  • Jimmy Howard needs to have a strong bounce back game after his performance in game three. A strong start will be important to get the confidence level up and it will help for him to feed off of the crowd’s energy.

  • Ryan Getzlaf essentially put the nail in the coffin in game three with his shorthanded goal in the second period. He was able to add an assist as well. For the series, Getzlaf now has 2 goals and 2 assists and must be contained if the Red Wings ware to have a chance to come back and win this series.
  • Jonas Hiller posted the shutout in game three stopping all 23 of the Red Wings shots so he will have confidence coming out in the game tonight. It will be important for the Red Wings to get a quick goal on Hiller so they can shake his confidence some like they did in game two.
