Turnbull's Turn

Detroit bats were silent last night. They managed a meager two hits and never really mounted a threat against Matt Shoemaker. The Toronto pitcher continued his past success against the Tigers after moving on from the Angels. The Wyandotte native now holds a 3-1 record against his home town team, with a 0.83 ERA.

Matthew Boyd struck out ten, and through the first three innings, looked dominant. A four-run inning in the 4th sealed his fate as the bats never came around and the only scoring threat got caught in a rundown in the top of the 6th-inning.

Today, Spencer Turnbull gets his first start replacing the injured Michael Fulmer. Turnbull had an impressive spring pitching to the tune of a 1.80 ERA with 15 strikeouts and only two walks over 15 innings. He looks to carry that momentum into the regular season. Turnbull appeared in four games last September after his call up.

He opposes Aaron Sanchez who makes his 2019 debut. Sanchez was 4-6 in 2018 with a 4.89 ERA. Sanchez has been injury plagued the past few seasons, but he has had success against Detroit in his career — including a win last season.

The Detroit offense has managed six hits and two runs through the first two games of this season-opening four-game series. Nicholas Castellanos is off to a good start with three hits in his first seven at-bats, but he needs some help from the rest of the lineup to get the Tigers in the win column today. Gordon Beckham and Dustin Peterson get their first starts of the season today.
