Detroit Tigers skipper Ron Gardenhire’s office door was closed on Sunday morning after the clubhouse was opened to the media. And while that sometimes will signal that a trade or major team move could be imminent, especially with the trade deadline this week, Gardenhire insisted the delay wasn’t because of such a move.

“Just on the phone, conference call,” Gardenhire said. “Just general stuff, roster stuff, crazy stuff. But nothing is happening. Everybody is just posturing. I sat and listened to the conference call — a lot of great ideas, but nothing’s in place.”
The Tigers currently sit at a ghastly 30-70 record ahead of this afternoon’s series finale with the Seattle Mariners, who need one more win to sweep the series over Detroit. With Wednesday’s trade deadline looming, the Tigers are going to look different come August 1.
Nobody knows that better than Gardenhire, who insists that his team isn’t happy with being 40 games below the .500 mark.
“We are talking about our roster all the time,” Gardenhire said. “We are talking about what we can do to make it better up here right now. We’re looking into it and we’re talking about it.”
“But, we’re out here on the West Coast, which makes a big difference,” he continued. “We are throwing ideas around. We don’t want to just stand here and take this. No one does. But it is what it is right now. We are working on it.
“It’s a process.”
Pitcher Shane Greene and right fielder Nick Castellanos (who is being held out of today’s game as a precaution) are among the prime trade candidates for the Tigers, and to a lesser extend, pitcher Matthew Boyd.
