The Detroit Tigers may have another injury concern on their hands.
Second baseman Gleyber Torres exited Monday night’s game against the Houston Astros in the second inning after appearing to suffer an injury during an at-bat.
According to reports, Torres grimaced and grabbed at his left side after a swing. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch and assistant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades quickly came out to evaluate him, and after a brief discussion, Torres was removed from the game.
Hao-Yu Lee entered the contest and completed Torres’ at-bat, striking out against Astros starter Kai-Wei Teng.
The development is especially concerning given Torres’ recent injury history. Earlier this season, the veteran infielder missed time with a left oblique strain before returning to the Tigers’ lineup.
Torres had just recently been activated from the injured list and was beginning to regain his rhythm at the plate. Entering Monday’s action, the three-time All-Star was hitting .282 with four home runs, 18 RBIs, and a .397 on-base percentage in 42 games.
The Tigers have not yet provided an official diagnosis or timetable, but the fact that Torres immediately grabbed his left side will undoubtedly raise concerns that the injury could be related to the oblique issue that sidelined him earlier this year.
Detroit will likely provide an update on Torres’ status following the game or before Tuesday’s matchup in Houston.
