Golden Tate: We’re not the same old Lions

Fans of the Detroit Lions have a special phrase that sums up their feelings about when things predictably go wrong for their team – “Same Old Lions.” That phrase is being uttered plenty these days, after yet another season of promise ends with another playoff disappointment.

However, Lions receiver Golden Tate isn’t fond of that notion and thinks it’s time to drop it.

“We have an opportunity to do something special this year, or next year, the year after that, from here on out,” Tate explained. “I can promise you we’re not the same old Lions that people have been talking about the last 20 years.”

The differences, according to Tate, are all throughout the organization – not just the players on the field.

“We’re more of a complete organization from head to toe, from (owner Martha Ford) making everything possible to the new additions to the cafeteria to the turf field inside the stadium, everything,” Tate said. “We’re moving in the right direction, and we’re excited.”

Optimism is always a key ingredient to a successful team. But Lions fans have every right to be skeptical. Until their team enjoys playoff success – and dare I say it, a Superbowl, the “Same Old Lions” moniker is going to be sticking around.

It’s up to the players to change it. The city has been waiting long enough.
