A new law set to go into effect in 2023 will soon allow collegiate athletes in Michigan to profit from their likeness for the first time in state history.
They'll soon be able to enter endorsement deals, accept gifts without fear of punishment, and hire agents. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bipartisan legislation earlier today.
“For years we have all enjoyed the incredible talent of young athletes across the state. This legislation will change the lives of young men and women for years to come,” Whitmer stated.
“I am hopeful that the NCAA will set a national standard so that all players across the country are afforded the same opportunities. As always stay safe and go green!”
Michigan becomes the sixth state to pass such legislation, following in the footsteps of California, Florida, Colorado, Nebraska and New Jersey.
The bill was sponsored by state representative Joe Tate, a former Michigan State Spartans offensive lineman.
“At its core, this legislation is to ensure student-athletes in Michigan are treated fairly and they are able to have a fulfilling college experience,” Tate said.
