Grading Bob Quinn’s first NFL draft class for the Detroit Lions

LS Jimmy Landes (Round 6, No. 210)

Quinn’s biggest head-scratcher of the draft was no doubt Jimmy Landes – who the Lions could have easily signed as an undrafted free agent but instead, they chose to use a draft selection on the Baylor product. Shoulder surgery ended his season before it could barely begin and veteran Don Muhlbach marched towards his 13th straight season as a starting snapper for the Lions. Landes can take over for an aging Muhlbach as early as next season.

Pick Grade: C

RB Dwayne Washington (Round 7, No. 236)

Quinn out the bow on top of his first ever Lions draft class by selecting Washington Huskies running back Dwayne Washington with his final draft pick. Washington broke out in the preseason and earned a spot on the 53-man regular season roster, where he provided spot duty for backs Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick. When Abdullah fell with a season-ending injury, Washington stepped up but without the success, he had in the preseason. He will compete for touches in a deep Lions backfield this summer in camp. Any time you get production from a seventh rounder in his rookie season, that’s a win.

Pick Grade: B-

Notable undrafted signings

  • WR Jace Billingsley
  • CB Adairius Barnes
  • TE Cole Wick

Quinn Final 2016 NFL Draft Grade: B+

Bob Quinn did exactly what he wanted and needed to do in his first NFL draft for the Detroit Lions. He added talent and depth along the offensive and defensive lines and he added players he knew could contribute from the start. If he can follow off his first stellar draft class with a second one that’s even close to the quality of his first, then we will all see what the Quinn-inspired Lions look like real soon.
