The Grand Rapids Griffins are set to face the Chicago Wolves in the second round of the American Hockey League playoffs. In the first round, the Griffins swept the Milwaukee Admirals in three games to advance.
It was a closer opening series than it appeared on paper for the Griffins. They needed two overtime wins to sweep the Admirals, which required two third period comebacks as well. Fortunately, the Griffins offense was able to come through in the clutch to put them through to the next round.
Their opponents in the second round will be coming off of a close series that came down to the final game as the Wolves defeated the Charlotte Checkers in five games.
Both of these sides met 10 times during the regular season as the Griffins won eight of the 10.
Players to Watch
The Griffins have been led by Tyler Bertuzzi and Evgeni Svechnikov who both contributed four points apiece in the first round. Tomas Nosek has also been an integral part of the offense as he netted the game-winner in overtime in game three against the Admirals.
A pair of rookies has played a huge part in the Wolves comeback in their series against the Checkers. Adam Musil and Samuel Bias both have five points thus far in the playoffs as the two first-year players are stepping up to lead Chicago. Left-winger Kenny Agostino also has five points and is an offensively gifted player the Griffins will have to watch.
Jared Coreau started every game for the Griffins thus far, and has made 94 saves in three games. Ville Husso has been the starter for the Wolves and has let in 12 goals in five games in the first round.
