The Detroit Lions have built one of the deepest rosters in the NFL, and that depth is beginning to earn national recognition.
In a recent exercise putting together the league’s ultimate “All-Backup Team,” ESPN NFL analyst Bill Barnwell selected wide receiver Greg Dortch as Detroit’s representative, highlighting the veteran slot receiver as one of the best non-starters in football.
Greg Dortch Gives Lions Valuable Depth
Barnwell praised Dortch for being one of the NFL’s most dependable backup receivers, noting that despite standing just 5-foot-7, he has consistently produced whenever given opportunities.
He also pointed to Dortch’s exceptional hands, writing that the veteran has dropped just three of his 142 targets over the past four seasons, making him one of the league’s most reliable pass catchers.
While Dortch may not be expected to open the season as one of Detroit’s starting wide receivers, his ability to step into the slot and make plays gives offensive coordinator Drew Petzing another dependable weapon.
More Than Just a Receiver
Barnwell also highlighted another area where Dortch could make an impact for the Lions.
In addition to serving as a reliable slot receiver, Dortch provides valuable insurance in the return game, giving Detroit another option on both punt and kickoff returns. That versatility only increases his value on game day and could make him an important contributor throughout the 2026 season.
A Good Problem for Detroit
One of the biggest reasons the Lions are viewed as legitimate Super Bowl contenders is their roster depth.
Detroit has star power throughout the lineup, but the team also boasts experienced role players capable of stepping into larger roles when injuries inevitably occur over the course of an NFL season.
Dortch is a perfect example of that philosophy. He may not be one of Detroit’s projected Week 1 starters, but his reliable hands, versatility, and experience make him exactly the type of player championship teams rely on when the season reaches its most critical moments.
For the Lions, having a player recognized as one of the NFL’s premier backups is less about individual accolades and more about just how deep this roster has become.
