Heading into the 2022 season, many believed the Detroit Tigers were a team that could rise up and challenge for a wild card spot in the American League.
Well, that was then and this is now and the Tigers are off to a 9-23 start and though their playoff dreams are not officially shattered, there have not been any signs of them turning things around and making a run.
Prior to Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, Tigers closer Gregory Soto, who has struggled in his last two appearances, spoke to the media and explained that tough outings happen and that he is always focused on the next game.
“It’s just a baseball thing,” Soto said Friday. “Those outings are supposed to come, either at the beginning, the middle or the end of the season, but they’re going to come. And now, they’re happening.”

“There’s nothing I keep on my mind,” Soto said. “Even when I do good, I do the same thing. I turn the page and focus on tomorrow’s game. Regardless of a good or bad outing, I just turn the page.”
Despite having one of the worst records in baseball, Soto still believes the Tigers can “win everything.”
“We have a winning team,” Soto said. “We have a chance to win this division. We have a chance to win everything. It’s just a matter of putting all the things together to start winning as we should.”

Believe it or not, despite their awful start to the season, the Tigers are only nine games out of first place in the American League Central as the Minnesota Twins lead the way with an 18-14 record.
One thing is for certain, if the Tigers are going to challenge for the American League Central crown, they are going to have to get themselves together quickly, because they cannot afford to dig their hole much deeper.
