Red Wings backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, known by his nickname of “Monster”, is close to returning to the Detroit lineup.
Gustavsson has been on injured reserve since November 6th, when he suffered a dislocated shoulder while unsuccessfully trying to stop Derek Brassard’s game winning goal during Detroit’s 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Rangers.
Before his injury, Gustavsson had compiled a 1-1-1 record with a solid 2.30 goals against average and a shutout. His strong play while Red Wings starter Jimmy Howard was nursing an injury of his own last season and subsequently struggled upon returning helped propel the Red Wings to their 23rd consecutive playoff appearance last season.
The Red Wings are expected to assign Gustavsson to their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, for a conditioning stint before returning to big leagues.
