We’ve reached the half at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, where the Cowboys lead the Lions by a score of 13-10. Here are some observations from the first half:
1. Run game a little slower this week
Whether it be because the offensive line hasn’t been as dominant as they were last week, or the Cowboys’ run defense is a little better than New England’s, the run game hasn’t been as much of a strength this week. But, don’t let that make you think that LeGarrette Blount, Kerryon Johnson, and Theo Riddick are having a bad game. The first play of the game went for 32 yards on the feet of Johnson. Outside of that play, the three have combined for 53 yards on the ground.
2. Defense doing well against the run
We all knew coming into this game that a big factor would be how well Detroit’s defense would be able to contain Ezekiel Elliott. They’ve done quite well to this point. Elliott did break one play for 19 yards, but has been held to a total of 58 yards at the half.
3. Big day for Darius Slay
“Big Play” Slay has had a day so far. He knocked a ball out of Tavon Austin‘s hands in the end zone, and has also been in on a couple other breakups. The Cowboys have made a point of trying to work on Slay, and to this point, he has lived up to his reputation of making big plays. He has been credited with three pass breakups to this point today.
4. Pass defense not great
Statistically, Detroit has the best pass defense in the league. They have not lived up to that reputation so far this afternoon. Dak Prescott has thrown for 134 yards and a touchdown in the first half. He has been sacked one time, which was the only hit he has taken so far today.
