Harbaugh names Greg Mattison U-M’s defensive coordinator for Citrus Bowl

On Sunday, it was announced that the University of Michigan will be playing against Florida in the Citrus Bowl on January 1st.

With the departure of former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, who accepted the head coach position at Maryland, there was some question as to who would assume the role as defensive coordinator for the Wolverines bowl game. Well, head coach Jim Harbaugh has answered that question and defensive line coach Greg Mattison will get the nod.

“That will be for the bowl season and then we’ll evaluate from there,” Harbaugh said. “We’re approaching it to win the next game and no timetable. We’ll evaluate it as we go. Excited to have Greg coordinate the defense. I think we’re going to do a fantastic job.”

Mattison, of course, was the Wolverines defensive coordinator for the previous four seasons before Harbaugh took over as head coach and replaced him with Durkin.

Harbaugh announced last week that Chris Partridge, who served as player personnel director, would be coaching the linebackers for the Wolverines bowl game.

It is yet to be determined who will be assigned the permanent positions of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the 2016 season, but Harbaugh has not ruled out keeping both Mattison and Partridge in those spots.

“All possibilities are being considered right now,” Harbaugh said of Mattison, who was a three-year defensive coordinator for Harbaugh’s brother John with the Baltimore Ravens. “That’s one of them. Greg’s a fantastic coach and one heck of a good coach and can certainly handle the pressure calling defenses. He would be excellent. That’s a possibility.”
