Highlights of Bob Quinn’s pre-draft press conference

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn held a press conference on Thursday to discuss where the team was at heading into next week’s NFL Draft. Here is a quick recap of what Quinn had to say.

First off, Quinn thanked the scouts who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to prepare for the draft. He also noted that this year’s draft has exceptional depth, and that the Lions will have an opportunity to improve with their 10 picks.

While this will be Quinn’s first draft as a GM, he has had experience working within the war room in the Patriots organization and he learned that many of the decisions for the draft are made beforehand. The Lions will trust their draft board and let the draft come to them.

Quinn did not make it clear whether or not the Lions are interested in cornerback Josh Norman, who most recently became an unrestricted free agent after the Carolina Panthers rescinded his franchise tag. The Lions GM did say that they’re not interested in trading quarterback Matthew Stafford.

When asked about what were the biggest needs for Detroit in this year’s draft, Quinn said team needs are “to pick best players for the Detroit Lions”. He also told the media that the Lions were in the process going through their draft board and red or pink flagging players with character concerns. One such player that was “red-flagged” by management was Ole Miss defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche.

Quinn also told reporters that the team has made an emphasis on finding players who love the game of football in light of the current trend of players retiring early.

Finally, there was no update on the status of linebacker Stephen Tulloch, other than that he is still on the roster. It was thought that the Lions would release Tulloch earlier in the off-season, but no such move has been made up to this point. Although, Detroit could use the veteran linebacker as trade bait during the draft.

With just a week before the 2016 NFL Draft is underway in Chicago, we shall see shortly how the Lions and Bob Quinn attack the draft.
