Skubal Dominates, Bullpen Keeps It Level
Left-hander Tarik Skubal set the tone, carving up Cleveland for seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Detroit’s bullpen protected the 1–0 edge until the Guardians scratched across a run in the ninth, sending the game to extras tied at 1–1.
Sweeney Breaks the Deadlock
After nine tense innings in Cleveland, Detroit finally punched through. Trey Sweeney turned a 1–1 tie into a 4–1 lead by launching a first-pitch cutter into the left-field seats for his fifth homer of the season. The three-run shot scored Parker Meadows and Javier Báez and silenced the Progressive Field crowd.
Vierling Keeps the Line Moving
The Tigers kept the pressure on. Three pitches after Sweeney’s blast, Gleyber Torres ripped a single and raced home when Matt Vierling dropped a fly just inside the left-field line for a run-scoring double. A hurried relay skipped past the infield, letting Vierling advance to third and pushing the score to 5–1.
Greene Slams the Door
With Vierling standing ninety feet away, Riley Greene unloaded on a hanging slider and sent it deep into the left-field bleachers. The two-run blast, Greene’s 22nd of the year, capped a six-run outburst and gave Detroit a comfortable 7–1 cushion.
Looking Ahead
The Tigers (57-34) are home tomorrow (7/7) to take on the Rays (48-41) at Comerica Park.
