For those of you who have read my articles on Detroit Sports Nation, I would first like to say thank you for taking your precious time to do so. Hopefully, you have left satisfied more often than not. If you have read my work on a regular basis, you probably realize that I generally, but not always, like to think about the glass being half-full when it comes to our teams. That being said, I signed up to write an article about how the Detroit Lions can be eliminated from playoff contention on New Year’s Day, and though I have put it off for as long as possible, here you go. (I hate this)
How the Detroit Lions could be eliminated from playoff contention on New Year’s Day
First of all, none of this matters because the Detroit Lions are going to win against the Chicago Bears, they are going to beat the Green Bay Packers in Week 18, and they are going to get the help they need to squeeze into the playoffs.
But since you clicked on this article to learn how the Lions can be eliminated by the end of the day on Sunday, here you go.
Really, it’s quite simple.
As it stands, the Lions, who are 7-8, have to jump two of the following three teams to get into the playoffs.
New York Giants (8-6-1)
Washington Commanders (7-7-1)
Seattle Seahawks (7-8) *Seahawks have the tiebreaker over the Lions because of their head-to-head win earlier in the year
The only way the Lions can pass the Giants is if the Giants lose out and the Lions win out, and that seems unlikely since the Giants play the Colts this week.
If the Lions lose to the Bears on Sunday, and the Commanders beat the Cleveland Browns, the Lions would no longer have a chance to jump two of the teams listed above to earn a wild-card berth in the playoffs.
If the Lions beat the Bears, regardless of what happens around the league, the Lions would technically still be alive for a playoff spot heading into Lambeau Field in Week 18.
But, as I said earlier, none of this matters because the Detroit Lions are going to win out and make the playoffs!
