How the Detroit Lions could land Seattle Seahawks WR DK Metcalf

With the 2022 NFL Draft coming quickly, many continue to discuss the wide receiver situation with the Detroit Lions.

Sure, the Lions have improved their wide receiver room during the offseason by adding free agent D.J. Chark, but he was only signed to a 1-year deal. Because of that, it seems likely that the Lions will select a wide receiver in one of the first three rounds.

But could Lions GM Brad Holmes add a stud receiver before the NFL draft even begins?

There has been plenty of speculation around Seattle Seahawks WR DK Metcalf and how he could be available via trade.

The first question is, should the Lions be interested in trading for Metcalf and the second question is, what would they have to give up to land him?

To answer the first question, if I was Lions GM Brad Holmes, I would not be interested in adding Metcalf to the roster. Yes, Metcalf is still just 24, but the big issue is that he only is under contract through the 2022 season, which means the Lions would have to break the bank just to keep him around long-term. That is something I would absolutely not be willing to do for a wide receiver.

But let’s just say that Holmes was drugged by somebody and decided that trading for Metcalf would be a great idea. What would it cost?

Well, on Thursday, ESPN released an article in which they look at seven potential trade offers that could pry Metcalf from the Seahawks. Though the Lions were not included on the list, the hypothetical offers give us an idea of what it would take to land Metcalf.

Here are the seven offers:

-The Eagles would trade 2022 third- and fifth-round picks (Nos. 83 and 154).

-The Browns would trade a 2023 second-round pick and quarterback Baker Mayfield.

-The Falcons would trade 2022 second- and fifth-round picks (Nos. 58 and 151), along with a 2023 fourth-round pick.

-The Chiefs would trade 2022 first- and third-round picks (Nos. 30 and 103).

-The Packers would trade 2022 first- and fourth-round picks (Nos. 28 and 132).

-The Saints would trade 2022 first- and third-round picks (Nos. 16 and 98).

-The Jets would trade 2022 first- and third-round picks (Nos. 10 and 69).

After evaluating those seven trade offers, Seahawks reporter Brady Henderson said that he does not believe any of them would be accepted. But he added that the Jets offer was close as he thinks the Seahawks would be looking for a pair of first-round picks or the equivalent.

With that being said, here is the offer I believe the Lions could make that would at least get the attention of the Seahawks’ front office.

Lions trade: No. 32 overall pick, No. 97 overall pick, 2023 first-round pick (via Rams), 2023 third-round pick

Seahawks trade: DK Metcalf

Personally, I would not make this trade if I was Lions GM Brad Holmes. As I said above, I am not interested in bringing in Metcalf knowing that I would have to give him a mega-contract just to keep him around past the 2022 season.

I believe that Holmes is in lockstep with me when it comes to building an NFL roster. Build a core through the NFL draft and then add key free-agent pieces to help complete the puzzle. It is about acquiring draft capital (lottery tickets) rather than giving it away. Especially when the team is more than a player or two away from truly contending for a Super Bowl.

Nation, would you make this deal if you were Brad Holmes?
