How waiving Justin Abdelkader will impact the Detroit Red Wings salary cap

The Detroit Red Wings made the decision to part ways with a long tenured veteran on Tuesday afternoon, waiving forward Justin Abdelkader for the purposes of a compliance buyout of the three remaining years of his deal.

Let’s take a look at how this move will affect the salary cap for the Red Wings moving forward.

The buyout will be spread over the next six years, during which Abdelkader will be paid $1.055 million each year. According to aggregate website Puck Media, Abdelkader’s buyout will count $1.8 million against the salary cap this season, $2.3 million against the cap the next two years, and then $1.06 million against the cap hit for the remaining three years:
