INJURY UPDATE: Dylan Larkin to be sidelined

The Detroit Red Wings will be without the services of forward Dylan Larkin for at least a week, and possibly longer than that after he suffered what the team is calling a “strained oblique” during Friday night’s 3-2 overtime victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena.

Larkin was injured in overtime while attempting to catch Toronto’s Mitch Marner in a foot race. He immediately grabbed his right side while wincing and falling to the ice, and then left for the locker room.

“He’s got a little bit of an upper-body (injury), we’ll know more tomorrow,” head coach Jeff Blashill said following Friday night’s game. “He’s going to travel. I’m hoping he plays tomorrow (Saturday). It’s not something like, I heard news he wouldn’t have a chance. I’m hoping he plays. We’ll see.”

He’ll be unavailable for today’s game against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre (though he did travel with the team), as well as this week’s Thursday night matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights back home.

With 49 points (22 goals and 27 assists), Larkin was on pace for 77 points.

Red Wings to wear special patch against Maple Leafs

Friday night will be a special one at Little Caesars Arena in Downtown Detroit as the Detroit Red Wings will be retiring the No. 4 jersey of Red Kelly.

During the game, the Wings will be wearing a special patch on their sweaters, honoring Kelly.

Here is a look at what the patches will look like.

Leonard “Red” Kelly spent parts of 13 seasons with the Red Wings, winning four Stanley Cups, earning three Lady Byng Trophies and claiming the Norris Trophy in 1954. Kelly also led the Maple Leafs to four Stanley Cups and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969, in addition to being named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in conjunction with the league’s celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2016-17.
