Detroit Lions rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa has had plenty to smile about over the past few months, key touchdowns, late-season momentum, and a growing sense that he truly belongs in the NFL. But one of his favorite memories from his first season in Detroit didn’t happen on the field. It happened over dinner.
And it came with a fake $41,000 bill.
A Rookie Tradition — With a Twist
Like countless rookies before them, TeSlaa, Dominic Lovett, and Isaiah Williams took the veteran receivers out for their rookie dinner, a long-standing (and sometimes costly) NFL ritual. The team headed to Sexy Steak in Detroit, and with Amon-Ra St. Brown leading the ordering charge, the rookies assumed they were in for a pricey night.
TeSlaa said things got real as soon as the server handed over the receipt.
“We got our food, and Saint is ordering whatever he wants, asking the server what’s the most expensive thing you got,” TeSlaa said via MLive. “Then they bring the bill — and it says $41,000. Me, Dom, and Meeks are looking at each other like, ‘How are we going to cover this?’ We’re thinking we’re going to have to call our credit card companies.”
The veterans took the rookies’ cards. The panic was real. The sweating? Very real.
Then, the big reveal.
“They bring the cards back, and the real total was like $4,000,” TeSlaa said. “St. Brown pulled the prank on us.”
Classic Saint.
A Moment That Meant More Than a Joke
Sure, the prank was funny, but for TeSlaa, it meant something deeper.
It reminded him where he was sitting… and who he was sitting with.
The Hudsonville native grew up watching the Lions. Now, he shares a locker room and dinner table with the very stars he once idolized.
“I was sitting there thinking, I used to idolize everyone at this table,” he said. “Now it’s just my reality. I’m not star-struck anymore. I’m just part of it. And that’s been really cool.”
That perspective didn’t happen overnight. TeSlaa admitted that early in the season, the pressure got to him.
“I was nervous coming into camp. I played a little uptight at first,” he said. “But as the season went on and I gained confidence, I was able to relax and play better.”
The results showed.
TeSlaa finished his rookie season with 239 receiving yards and six touchdowns — four of those scores coming in the Lions’ final six games. As his comfort grew, so did his impact.
