Jadeveon Clowney Named Perfect Fit for Detroit Lions

Could the Detroit Lions make another major move to strengthen their pass rush before the 2026 season begins?

According to ESPN analyst Matt Bowen, former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney is the best remaining free agent fit for the Lions.

The idea was included in Bowen’s recent ESPN article titled “2026 NFL offseason: Best NFL team fits for 14 free agents.”

And honestly, it is not difficult to see the logic.

Jadeveon Clowney could provide major depth for Detroit

Bowen pointed to Detroit’s continued need for rotational edge depth opposite Aidan Hutchinson as one reason Clowney makes sense.

The Lions already invested heavily in the position during the draft, selecting edge rusher Derrick Moore in the second round.

Still, adding an experienced veteran like Clowney could give Detroit another proven pass rushing option for obvious passing situations.

As noted by Bowen, Clowney recorded 8.5 sacks and 32 pressures in just 13 games last season with the Dallas Cowboys.

Even at this stage of his career, Clowney continues to show he can disrupt quarterbacks when healthy.

Lions continue building dangerous defensive front

Detroit’s defensive line already projects as one of the team’s biggest strengths entering 2026.

Between Hutchinson, rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams, veteran interior depth, and now Derrick Moore, the Lions have continued investing heavily in the trenches under head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes.

Adding Clowney would only deepen that rotation even further.

Bowen specifically noted that Clowney could provide valuable rotational snaps for defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s defense.

Clowney still one of NFL’s most recognizable defenders

Selected first overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, Clowney has built a lengthy NFL résumé across multiple franchises.

While injuries have occasionally limited him throughout his career, he has remained one of the league’s more physically imposing edge defenders for over a decade.

Now, the possibility of joining a Super Bowl contender like Detroit could become appealing as Clowney searches for his next opportunity.

Whether the Lions ultimately pursue the move remains to be seen.

But ESPN clearly believes the fit makes plenty of sense.
