Inside the Article:
Heading into the 2022 regular season, there was plenty of chatter about Detroit Lions running back D’Andre Swift, and how if he remained healthy, he could be one of the best all-around backs in the NFL. But, as we know, Swift was not the best running back on the Lions in 2022 as that honor went to Jamaal Williams. Not only did Williams rush for over 1,000 yards on the season, but he also broke Barry Sanders‘ franchise record for the most rushing touchdowns in a season. The question is, will Williams be back with the Lions for the 2023 season?
What is Jamaal Williams’ market value?
In case you have not heard by now, Williams is set to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins, and Lions GM Brad Holmes will have an important decision to make.
There is no question about it that Williams, who made $3,000,000 in 2022 is deserving of a raise, but will he demand more than the Lions are willing to shell out for a running back? Especially when they already have Swift.
According to Spotrac, Williams’ market value is currently set at 2 years, $8,355,328, or $4,177,664 per season.
Should the Detroit Lions re-sign Jamaal Williams?
In my opinion, if Williams is willing to take a 2-year, $8.5 million or so offer, the Lions should write up the contract as quickly as they can before he changes his mind.
Here’s the thing. As solid as Williams was as a running back for the Lions in 2022, he was even more important to the team as a leader in the locker room. Because of that, he is worth more than a player who just puts up stats.
Williams has said he wants to play for the Lions moving forward, and head coach Dan Campbell has professed his love for Jamaal on multiple occasions.
It would be very surprising to me if we are not watching Williams score plenty more touchdowns for the Lions in 2023.
