When the Detroit Lions take the field in 2021, they will be doing so for the first time with Jared Goff as their starting quarterback.
Goff, of course, was acquired by the Lions via a trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams.
Every since the trade was made, there has been chatter about Goff reworking his contract to free up some cap space for the Lions and that is exactly what has happened.
According to Field Yates, the Lions have converted $20 million of Goff’s salary into a signing bonus, which frees up an additional $15 million in cap space for the 2021 season. As noted by Yates, the move will add $5 million in cap charges to Goff’s deal from 2022-2024, while the Lions get more operating room for the remainder of the season.
