The math isn’t pretty anymore, and the Detroit Lions know it.
After a heartbreaking loss to the Steelers that left their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the Lions are officially in prove-it mode. No margin for error. No guarantees. Just two games left, and a whole lot of pressure.
Quarterback Jared Goff didn’t shy away from that reality after the game. In fact, he leaned into it, echoing a message that head coach Dan Campbell delivered to the locker room.

Campbell’s Message: This Is About Identity
According to Goff, the focus inside the building has shifted from scenarios and percentages to something more fundamental: character.
“The message was to find out who we are, character-wise — find out what we’re made of,” Goff said. “We know the percentages. We know we’re not eliminated, but we also know we need some things to go our way.
Find out who we are, see if we can win these last two, and see if we can get in. And I know we’ll be dangerous if we can. That’s the hard part.”
That line — “find out who we are” — keeps coming up. And it’s not accidental.
Goff: The Lions Know Who They Are — Even If It Hasn’t Always Shown
Despite the inconsistency and late-season frustration, Goff pushed back on the idea that the Lions are still searching for an identity.
“I know who we are. I know exactly who we are. I think we’ve struggled to do it successfully every game, but I know who we are, and I know what we can be. It’s just that certain games we haven’t been firing on all cylinders.”
That honesty matters. The Lions haven’t been blown out of relevance; they’ve been undone by missed opportunities, uneven execution, and a handful of moments that swung entire games.
Now, those moments are magnified.
Pressure Is Real — And New
For the past couple of seasons, Detroit lived comfortably inside the playoff picture. That’s no longer the case.
Goff admitted this feeling, being on the outside looking in, is unfamiliar territory for this group.
“Yeah, we haven’t had that feeling, and it’s creeping in on us now. We’ve got to find a way. It goes back to Dan’s message — who are we? Are we who we say we are?”
And here’s the key part: the Lions don’t just have to win. They have to win without knowing if it will even be enough.
“In games that are meaningful now, but you don’t know if they will be depending on what other things happen, are we still going to be who we say we are, show up to work, and do the whole thing on a short week?”
Built for the Moment — Or Not
Detroit’s final two games won’t be easy. They’re on the road. The environments will be hostile. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
And yet, Goff sounded energized, not rattled.
“It’s tough. We’ve got to go on the road, it’s a hostile environment, it’s hard. But we’re built for it. I’m excited to see guys bounce back and find a way to get a win this week.”
The Bottom Line
This isn’t about excuses.
It’s not about officiating.
And it’s no longer about hypotheticals.
The Lions have two games left to prove they are exactly who they’ve been saying they are all season. Win, and the door stays cracked open. Lose, and the answers come fast, and painfully.
As Goff put it, this stretch isn’t just about football.
It’s about identity.

Goff has to learn to run and stop being a Sissy QB. Passing alone won’t do it. If he doesn’t start running with the ball, then we’ll never see the super bowl and Campbell has to start kicking those FG”s,
No quarterback could prosper behind that line.
