As the Detroit Lions prepare for their Week 18 NFC North showdown with the Minnesota Vikings, Jared Goff is reflecting on the journeys of quarterbacks who, like himself, have faced adversity and bounced back with new teams. Goff, now the franchise quarterback for the Lions, was traded from the Los Angeles Rams just four years ago, but his play has reached new heights in Detroit. In this regard, he finds common ground with another NFC quarterback—Sam Darnold.
The Importance of a Tailored Offensive System
Darnold, once considered a high draft pick with a promising future, was traded from the New York Jets to the Carolina Panthers and, like Goff, has seen a resurgence in his career after finding himself with a new team. In fact, Darnold’s improvement mirrors that of Goff, along with other quarterbacks like Matthew Stafford and Baker Mayfield, who have all found new success after moving to different teams.
“I think all those guys (Darnold, Mayfield, and Stafford) are pretty dang good players,” Goff said. “I said just a minute ago, ‘I wish Sam was doing it in a different division, playing as well as he is.’ He’s a helluva player, all those guys (are).”
Goff, who has thrived in Detroit with a system built around his strengths, acknowledged that success often comes when a quarterback is supported by a team that tailors its offense to his skill set. “When you get a team that’s running an offense around you and running an offense that’s tailored for your skills, good things tend to happen, especially when you’re a talented player like he is,” Goff explained.
The Importance of Patience in Quarterback Development
Despite the success of these quarterbacks, Goff pointed out that the NFL’s quick turnaround culture leaves little room for patience, which is essential for a quarterback’s development. He noted, however, that Darnold’s success this season is proof that with the right fit, any quarterback can thrive.
“Yeah, it would be patience but nobody’s got it and it’s only getting less and less,” Goff said. “So I don’t think it’s gonna change. Yeah, he’s certainly making a lot of people look foolish.”
Rooting for Sam Darnold… But Not in the NFC North
Although Goff may not root for Darnold as an NFC North rival, he’s happy for his success. “If he was doing it in the AFC or somewhere else, yeah, I’d be rooting the hell out of him,” Goff said. “But no, I’m very happy for his success. I wish it was elsewhere. He’s a hell of a player and a good guy that deserves what he’s done.”
With Darnold performing well, it’s clear that Goff and Darnold’s paths share a similar trajectory—both are now excelling after being cast aside, and both quarterbacks are key to their teams’ success as the Lions and Vikings clash for the NFC North title.
