Javier Báez is officially back with the Detroit Tigers.
Manager A.J. Hinch announced Tuesday on MLB Network Radio that Báez will be activated from the injured list, ending a lengthy absence that began April 29.
The veteran had been transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 11 before beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo.
Báez Returns After Encouraging Rehab Stretch
Báez showed signs of life during his time with the Mud Hens, including a three-double performance that caught Hinch’s attention.
Detroit initially appeared willing to give him additional rehab time, but his recent progress was enough for the club to bring him back.
Before the injury, Báez was hitting .256 with two home runs, six RBIs and a .678 OPS across 78 at-bats in 2026.
Those numbers are not overwhelming, but his return gives Hinch another experienced option in the middle of a difficult injury stretch.
Tigers Get Needed Roster Help
Báez’s versatility should help Detroit immediately.
He has experience at shortstop, second base and third base, though the Tigers have also used him in center field. That flexibility gives Hinch several ways to work Báez back into the lineup without locking him into one defensive role.
Detroit has been dealing with multiple injuries, including the possibility of Kerry Carpenter landing on the injured list with a left heel issue.
Getting Báez back now gives the Tigers another veteran bat and defender as they try to remain competitive through the summer.

Javier Báez’s return does not solve every problem facing the Tigers, but it gives A.J. Hinch another proven player at a time when Detroit badly needs healthy bodies.
The next question is how quickly Báez can regain his timing against major-league pitching and whether his strong rehab performance carries back to Detroit.
