The Detroit Tigers are one step closer to getting one of their most versatile players back.
According to Tigers beat writer Evan Woodbery, manager A.J. Hinch announced Monday that Javier Báez will begin a rehab assignment with Class A Lakeland on Tuesday night, marking an important milestone in his recovery from the injury that landed him on the 60-day injured list.
A Positive Step Forward
A rehab assignment is typically one of the final stages before a player returns to the Major Leagues, allowing him to regain timing at the plate and build back up defensively in game action.
While the Tigers have not announced a timetable for Báez’s activation, his return to live competition is an encouraging development as Detroit continues its pursuit of an American League Wild Card berth.
A Valuable Piece Awaits His Return
Before his injury, Báez had embraced a unique role for the Tigers, spending time at both shortstop and center field while providing veteran leadership throughout the clubhouse.
In 78 at-bats this season, the 33-year-old was hitting .256 with 20 hits, two home runs, six RBIs, and a .678 OPS.
Although his offensive numbers were modest, Báez’s defensive versatility and experience have remained valuable assets for Detroit.
Tigers Could Receive Timely Boost
Heading into the second half of the season, every addition matters for a Tigers club still firmly in the postseason hunt.
If Báez’s rehab assignment goes well, Detroit could soon welcome back another experienced contributor capable of helping both in the infield and the outfield.
