Javier Báez did not need much convincing that he was ready to rejoin the Detroit Tigers.

After testing his ankle during a brief rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo, Báez told manager A.J. Hinch he had seen enough. The veteran was activated from the injured list Tuesday and placed immediately into Detroit’s starting lineup in center field.

Báez Was Ready to Leave Triple-A Behind

Báez said his rehab games gave him the physical test he needed before returning to the majors.

“I played a couple games in Triple-A and made a couple plays that tested my ankle … I told (A.J.), I wasn’t trying to go on the road with the Triple-A team.”

The comment drew a laugh, but Báez was serious about his readiness.

“I did my whole routine yesterday and told him I was ready to play.”

That confidence fits Báez, who has never been shy about wanting to be on the field. Detroit initially appeared prepared to give him more rehab time, but his recent performance and comfort level convinced the Tigers to make the move.

Tigers Get Báez Back During Important Stretch

Báez’s return gives Hinch another experienced and versatile option as the Tigers navigate injuries and a crucial portion of the schedule.

Detroit has used Báez in center field, a role that allows the club to take advantage of his athleticism while keeping other infield combinations intact. The immediate question is whether his timing at the plate can match the confidence he showed during his rehab assignment.

Bottom Line

Javier Báez made his position clear. His ankle had been tested, his routine was complete and he had no interest in extending his stay with the Mud Hens.

Now he gets the chance to prove he was right.
