Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill is a former goaltender in his own right, having strapped on the pads at Ferris State University in the mid 1990’s and even earning Rookie of the Year honors in 1994.
Could we see him on the ice for the Red Wings in the crease? Okay, that’s not likely, but he didn’t hesitate to joke about it after today’s practice.
“If I don’t like the way the game is going, maybe I don’t want to be on the bench anymore, maybe I’d put the pads on and go from there.”
Considering Blashill’s past experience in the crease, it actually would make sense that the Red Wings bench boss would be a candidate to make an emergency appearance in net should both Jonathan Bernier and Thomas Greiss get injured in the same game.
We’ve seen it before in year’s past with the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers losing both goaltenders to injury, requiring emergency assistance in net.
