Jim Harbaugh disputes report that he told players to cheer during Penn State game

On Saturday, Michigan had a shot to move to .500 on the season when they took on a Penn State team that had not won a single game all season long. But instead of doing that, the Wolverines looked awful and uninspired as they lost 27-17 to the Nittany Lions.

Following the game, the Michigan Daily published a piece written by Theo Mackie in which he says Harbaugh had to ask his players to cheer following an amazing catch by A.J. Henning.

From Michigan Daily:

Instead, Michigan only sunk further into the depths of despair. The loudest cheers from Harbaugh’s sideline in the second half came on Penn State penalties. When freshman receiver A.J. Henning leapt over a Nittany Lions’ defender to make a highlight-reel catch, Harbaugh had to turn towards a group of players sitting on the bench and tell them to stand up and cheer.

Well, on Monday, Harbaugh met with the media and when he was asked about the report of him having to ask his players to cheer, the Wolverines head coach said the event never happened.

“I was excited for AJ, I didn’t turn to anybody to tell them to cheer…the example you’re giving didn’t happen.”

Up next for the Wolverines, assuming the game is not cancelled due to COVID-19, will take place on Saturday against Maryland. If played, it will be Michigan’s final chance to win a game at the Big House in 2020.
