Jimmy Howard said he would be okay with being traded

Petr Mrazek, despite his inconsistency near the end of this season, has arguably taken the reins as the number one goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings. The only problem is they are paying Jimmy Howard just over $5.2 million a year for the next 3 years to be that guy.

Mrazek is a restricted free agent this summer and the Red Wings will either look to sign him long term or to a bridge deal in the neighborhood of 2 years, which is the safer approach for now given the number of bad contracts the Red Wings are involved in right now.

This means that the Red Wings will have almost no other option but to trade Howard as they can’t afford to have that much money invested into their goaltending. This may prove to be difficult because of his own inconsistencies as well as his unfriendly cap-hit. The Red Wings would most likely have to retain some of his salary.

The other issue is that there are not a lot of teams that are in the market for a starting goaltender outside of maybe the Calgary Flames.  Howard knows that a trade is something he will have to consider, and during locker clean out today he seemed quite content with the idea.
