Detroit Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann was set to earn the full $25 million that he was owed on the remainder of his contract signed in 2015 had the team elected to release him.
However, Detroit decided to keep him around, and that decision could cost him – literally.
The most he can make this year on a proposed abbreviated 80-game schedule (in which players would receive a prorated amount of their salary) is $12.5 million. Of course, that's still a ton of money.
However, if there's no MLB season thanks to the spread of COVID-19, Zimmermann will only collect $286,000. For those of you who are good with math, that's barely 1.15% of the contract he signed.
Ouch.
Meanwhile, former Tiger Prince Fielder is among those who are still getting paid big money under terms of the March agreement between the owners and players.
