Campbell: Recovery Timeline Pushed Back
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell provided an update on defensive end Josh Paschal’s recovery, and it wasn’t the news fans were hoping for. Initially pegged to return by early September, Campbell admitted the timeline is slipping.

“I think Paschal could be a little later than we’d hoped…That could sting a little bit.”

Campbell said this morning, signaling that the 2022 second-round pick may not be available for the start of the season.
Paschal Stays on NFI List
Paschal remains on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list after undergoing a clean-out surgery earlier this offseason. Because of the setback, he’ll likely stay there into the season, which sidelines him for at least the first four games.
The delay isn’t just a blow to Paschal but also to Detroit’s defensive depth. The Lions were counting on him to rotate behind starters Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and Al-Quadin Muhammad. His absence leaves the group thin, especially with rookie Ahmed Hassanein also out due to a pectoral injury.
Roster Battles and Depth Concerns
Campbell noted that while the injury is disappointing, it does simplify roster decisions.
“It also cleans it up a little, too… At least you’re not hoping and waiting.”

The setback opens the door for players like Nate Lynn, Isaac Ukwu, and Mitchell Agude to battle for roster spots.
Even so, the Lions may be forced to look outside the building. A dip into free agency or the trade market isn’t off the table, especially with the opener drawing near.
What It Means Moving Forward
Paschal’s development has been slowed since entering the league. Limited by injuries in his first two seasons, he’s yet to put together a consistent stretch of games. For Detroit’s defense, already under scrutiny after last year’s struggles, staying healthy on the edge will be key if they hope to build on last season’s playoff run.
