Prior to Saturday’s practice, Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia told media members that Matthew Stafford would not be practicing due to a “planned rest day.”
Now, this is not something completely out of the ordinary with veterans like Stafford, but it is interesting considering he barely participated in Wednesday’s walkthrough and did not play at all in Thursday’s loss to the Patriots. That, coupled with a day off on Friday, means he has essentially had three-straight days off heading into Saturday.

Does a 31-year-old professional athlete really need four straight days off? Could it have to to with the offseason back procedure Stafford had done?
Even with all of that, one would hate to jump to any conclusions, but a tweet from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press got me thinking.
Are the Detroit Lions covering up a Matthew Stafford injury?
Here is Birkett’s tweet:
Matthew Stafford didn’t do any team drills at practice today, was told it was just “rest.” Asked him if his arm was fine on the way off the field and he said, “Oh yeah.”

What would make Birkett ask Stafford specifically about his arm?
I mean, Stafford said he is fine but why ask about the arm unless something prompted the question?
For now, I’m assuming (and praying) that Patricia was being truthful about the planned day off but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on.
So, you be the judge. Are the Detroit Lions covering up a Matthew Stafford injury or is this much ado about nothing?
