Sam Martin may be a punter but not many would question the overall value he has had to the Detroit Lions since being drafted by the team in 2013.

Unfortunately, Martin missed all of training camp and the Lions were forced to place him on the reserve/non-football injury list with an injured ankle, where he would remain for the first six games of the regular season.

But the interesting thing about this case was that neither Martin nor the Lions were willing to explain exactly how he hurt his ankle. Yet there was speculation wherever you looked as to how he was injured, including things like cliff diving and the most popular theory, skateboarding.

Well, according to a report from the Detroit News, we finally know how Martin suffered his ankle injury and it had nothing to do with jumping off a cliff or skateboarding.

From The Detroit News:

According to multiple sources, the Lions punter suffered the ankle injury that sidelined him all of training camp and the first six games of the regular season while on vacation in the Bahamas this summer. And while the two accounts vary slightly from whether he stepped on it or dropped it on himself  Martin was injured by a conch shell.

Martin and the team both declined the opportunity to confirm the story.

Martin returned for the Lions Sunday Night Football game against the Steelers, punting three times and averaging 39.7 yards.

LOOK: Initial injury reports revealed for Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers

As the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers prepare for a big division battle on Monday Night Football, some of each team’s key players have wound up on the injury report.

For the Lions, two key players on their injury report are rookie wide receiver Kenny Golladay and defensive end Ezekial Ansah. Golladay hasn’t played since getting injured in a Week 3 loss* to the Atlanta Falcons. If he is able to suit up and play for Detroit on Monday, it would provide a huge boost to the offense and could help improve their red zone efficiency.
