The Detroit Red Wings announced they have placed defenseman Alexey Marchenko on waivers. The move comes in order to make room for Brendan Smith to be brought back on the active roster after being on injured reserve.

Detroit needs right handed defensmen, and Marchenko has proven to be a decent option on the back end. The likelihood of him being claimed off waivers for nothing is pretty high, meaning the Wings will have basically given away another of their assets for absolutely nothing.
We'll find out by Noon on Saturday if Marchenko will report to Grand Rapids, or will be yet another Ken Holland giveaway.
