For the second time this season, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez has been placed on the disabled list with an irregular heartbeat.

Martinez was placed on the DL back in June and subsequently hospitalized with the same heart condition. It was a moment in Martinez’s life where he said it “makes you appreciate your life more.”

It’s a heart problem that has run through his family. Victor’s father died of a heart attack when he was young. It was his dad’s third heart attack at the time.

Martinez, who basically is playing on two bum knees these days, is hitting just .255 in 107 games played this season. His .697 OPS is the lowest of his career since 2008 when, at age 30, he was limited to just 79 games played as a member of the Cleveland Indians.

To take Victor’s place on the roster, the Tigers have recalled outfielder JaCoby Jones from Triple-A Toledo.

Jones is back with the big league club just days after being optioned back down to the minors to make room for pitcher Buck Farmer, who started for the Tigers on Saturday against the White Sox.

Jones was previously recalled back on August 18 when the team placed pitcher Anibal Sanchez on the DL. He played in five games when he returned, going 3 for 9 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and two walks. He started in center field in two of those five games and came on as a defensive replacement late in the other three. In total, the 25-year-old has played in just

In total, the 25-year-old has played in just 27 games for the Tigers this season, hitting .167 (10 for 68) with a .531 OPS. Jones figures to get a fair amount of playing time down the stretch, however, with the season virtually over and the team looks to audition some younger players in September.
