Michigan Falls to Oklahoma, Sideline Frustration Highlights Offensive Struggles

Michigan’s first real test of the 2025 season ended in a tough 24–13 loss at No. 18 Oklahoma, leaving plenty of questions about the Wolverines’ offense.

Heated Sideline Exchange Between Underwood and Haynes

Cameras caught a tense moment between Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood and running back Justice Haynes after a stalled drive that ended with a missed field goal. The exchange drew plenty of attention, but head coach Sherrone Moore quickly downplayed the incident, calling it “just a communication error.”

In a post-game press conference, Haynes was quick to downplay any tension, framing the moment as nothing more than competitive fire.

“We’re just competitors. We want to do what’s best for the team. We good; that’s my brother. I love him. We’re going to be just fine. Just a miscommunication. We all good.”

Haynes explained, emphasizing the bond he shares with quarterback Bryce Underwood. His remarks underscored both his leadership and the trust within the Wolverines’ locker room, reinforcing that the focus remains on team unity and the goals ahead rather than any momentary frustration.

Offensive Production Takes a Step Back

The Wolverines managed just 288 total yards, a sharp drop from their season opener against New Mexico. Underwood, who set a program freshman passing record in his debut, completed only 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards in Norman.

There were missed chances too, most notably an overthrow to Donaven McCulley, who had broken free for what could’ve been a touchdown. The passing game never found its rhythm, and Michigan’s offensive line looked shaky against the Sooners’ front.

Head Coach Sherrone Moore stressed afterward that the blame doesn’t fall squarely on his young quarterback.

It was just the execution and that’s everybody. It’s not just him.
And I think everybody, you know, put the pressure on, put it on him. But we all got to do our jobs and that’s O-line, that’s receivers, that’s running backs, whoever it is in those situations to make it easier for him.”

Moving Forward With Lessons Learned

Despite the frustration, both Underwood and Haynes made it clear they’re committed to working through growing pains together. The two addressed the sideline moment after the game and are focused on improving communication heading into next week.

For Michigan, the bigger takeaway is that offensive consistency remains a work in progress. If the Wolverines want to contend in the Big Ten, they’ll need their young stars to not only settle into their roles but also show poise in tough environments like Norman.
