The Detroit Lions got a bit of a scare late in the first quarter of Sunday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals when veteran return man Kalif Raymond went down after taking a hard hit.
Raymond was returning a punt when a Bengals defender leveled him with a heavy shot to the head, sending him to the turf immediately. Lions fans everywhere held their breath as trainers rushed to his side.
After several tense moments, Raymond thankfully was able to get up and walk off the field under his own power, drawing applause from both teams and fans in attendance. Raymond went straight to the blue medical tent for evaluation.
The Lions’ medical staff will likely evaluate Raymond for a potential concussion, as the hit appeared to make direct contact with his helmet. His status for the remainder of the game remains uncertain.
Raymond, known for his reliability and quickness as both a punt and kick returner, has been a key part of Detroit’s special teams unit.
