Oh what a simpler time 2015 was, especially for Detroit Red Wings fans. We still had captain Henrik Zetterberg at the helm. Niklas Kronwall’s knees hadn’t become glass just yet. The Magic Man Pavel Datsyuk was still wowing the world with Datsyukian Dekes when his health allowed. And a youngster by the name of Dylan Larkin was bursting onto the scene and showing what he was made of.
Larkin was a question mark around the league heading into the regular season, but Red Wings fans knew immediately he was something special. His speed, puck control, and shot quickly shuttled him up to top minutes with Detroit. He immediately had an impact for Detroit, scoring in his NHL debut on opening night 2015 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
After taking a sweet backhand pass from Zetterberg, Larkin carried towards the Leafs’ net. Without any fancy stickhandling, and a defender bearing down on him to block, Larkin shot. It was a laser wrist shot that found the top-corner and beat goaltender Jonathan Bernier for his first ever NHL goal.
Let’s hope that Larkin has some similar scoring luck tonight, when the Red Wings open their season against the Columbus Blue Jackets. GO WINGS!
