This has the makings of one hell of a week for the Detroit Lions and their fans as the NFL free agency period is set to get underway. In fact, the Lions already made their first move by signing free agent wide receiver, Danny Amendola.
That being said, what will Bob Quinn’s game plan be? Will he make a big splash or will he spread the money around, realizing his team has multiple needs on both sides of the football?
According to a couple of reports that have come out this morning, the Lions may end up being one of the major players when it comes to signing Trey Flowers.
Peter King is reporting the Lions are certainly expected to be in the mix for Flowers.
“Detroit loves Trey Flowers, which figures. His ex-defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia, is the Lions coach, and Detroit needs a versatile edge guy to replace Ziggy Ansah.”
Dan Graziano of ESPN concurs with King’s report.
“Multiple sources expect former Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers to get a monster deal (maybe in excess of $18 million per year) on the open market after many of the top free-agent pass-rushers got franchised. Two of Flowers’ former New England defensive coordinators are now head coaches: Brian Flores in Miami and Matt Patricia in Detroit. Watch Flowers for the Lions, who are expected to be among the most aggressive players on this market.”
Nation, with the Lions signing Danny Amendola for likely half the price it would have cost to get a guy like Adam Humphries, the door is certainly open to bringing in Flowers, even at a steep contract like $18 million.
