You stay classy, Toronto!

A bevy of Toronto Maple Leafs fans took to social media to complain that the penalty to defenseman Jake Muzzin for his dirty slew-foot of forward Anthony Mantha that resulted in the latter smacking his head on the ice cost their team a shutout victory.

Warning – massive hills of salt ahead:

How about that absolutely blown call on Jake Muzzin, and the intent to injure by Athanasiou. Hutch for the shutout.

That penalty on @MapleLeafs Jake Muzzin may have been the worst call of the year. #nhl #hockey

what an absolute joke of a penalty to Jake Muzzin

Really great that Michael Hutchinson loses a chance at a shutout because of what basically amounts to "two minutes for defending yourself too strongly" to Jake Muzzin.

The whole police system is nonsense. Nothing that's happened since the Muzzin hit should've happened.

4-1 and I’m FURIOUS that these refs called a BS second penalty on Muzzin, it cost Hutch a MUCH deserved shutout what a joke #LeafsForever

— JB (@BeLEAFingWithJB) December 22, 2019

All because Muzzin had a good clean hit and then defends himself when Mantha is the one who challenged him to a fight. How Muzzin came out of that with a double minor is beyond me. Refs being heros and cost Hutch the shutout. Are we even surprised anymore by the reffing?

Muzzin barely hit whoever he hit. Mantha got what he deserved

Idiot refs. I feel bad for Michael Hutchinson as he deserved a shutout. Feel bad for Muzzin too.

I felt bad that Hutchinson didn't get the shutout (especially because it came on a late power play that I didn't think should have been called – not sure at all why Muzzin got an extra two) but a win by a #Leafs backup goalie is worth celebrating – shutout or not! #NHL

@NHL must revise tonight's score to 4-0, giving Hutchinson the shutout given the clearly blown nature of the call on Muzzin. @PR_NHL should address the call, as this is unacceptable of such an organization.#Leafs #RedWings #Hutchinson #muzzin #LeafsForever

Hutchinson deserved a shoutout. Horrible penalty call on Muzzin. Nice win for the @MapleLeafs and finally supporting their backup goalie. #tmltalk https://t.co/fQJZrI0u7c

Brutal job calling a double minor on Jake Muzzin and kicking Dermott out for yelling at you for basically ruining a shutout for a struggling goalie. Own up to your mistakes. #leafs

— taylor s (@tsveinson) December 22, 2019

Muzzin hits a guy, Mantha goes after Muzzin and gets wrecked because he is trying to fight Muzzin. Muzzin gets a roughing penalty and an unsportsmanlike. Redwings score and ruin the shutout.

And of course, there were even a few gleeful fans who were happy to see Mantha suffer a potentially serious injury, including one with NSFW language we can’t post that essentially said Mantha deserved whatever brain damage he may have received.

Will Muzzin be suspended for his dirty play?
