In a series of posts on X, James explained that he seriously considered retirement after the season before taking time to decide what he still wanted from the game.

James opened his announcement by admitting that retirement felt likely when the season ended.
“I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game.”
The answer eventually became clear.
“I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.”
That was the heart of James’ decision. He was not searching for another paycheck or simply delaying retirement. He needed to know whether he still wanted the work, pressure and sacrifice that come with another NBA season.

“The last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out.”
After more than two decades in the league, James described this as his final major career choice.
“This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?”
His answer was simple. He still wants to compete for another championship.

James made clear that joining Philadelphia was about chasing the feeling that has driven his entire career.
“I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”
He then explained why he chose the 76ers.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”
The phrase “one last time” leaves little mystery about how James views this stage of his career. Philadelphia is not simply his next stop. He sees it as the final chapter.
James closed his message by acknowledging the cities and fan bases that shaped his career.
“Thank you LA. Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always home!”
