Lions DC Teryl Austin once again emerging as a strong head coaching candidate

Another year, another round of head coaching interviews for Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. Some of you may remember that he was the runner-up to Dan Quinn for the Falcons head coaching gig back in 2014. That year he also interviewed with the 49ers, Bears and Bills. And then last off-season, Austin visited the Browns, Giants, Dolphins and Titans.

Ironically when he was a top name in 2014, the Detroit Lions held down a top-5 defensive unit for the entire season. Now, it’s not quite the same. However he is apparently going to be a very “hot candidate” for many teams that will be looking to make a change with their head coaching position. But for now, Austin is very much content with his current position and is just going with the flow.

“There’s nothing I can do about whether I should’ve been (a coach already) or whether I could’ve been,” Austin said. “If it ever comes, it comes. If it doesn’t, I know I’ll do a good job wherever I am, doing whatever I’m doing.”

Jim Caldwell attributes a lot of the Lions record this season to Austin’s success despite dealing with multiple injuries this season with Ziggy Ansah, Haloti Ngata, Darius Slay and DeAndre Levy missing multiple games.

“I think that, every year, he’s done a tremendous job,” Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. “He did before he came here. He makes adjustments. He’s got the spirit and fire to move a group. And very knowledgeable.”

Austin has said recently that he would even be open to a head coach position in college football as well. We will keep a close eye on this situation as it develops. One thing is for sure and that is that Teryl Austin’s stock as sure been higher than it currently is, and that left him “high and dry” the last 2 seasons.

Wish Mr. Austin some luck, he gave us some pretty good years and some things to really be proud of!
