Lions guard Larry Warford appears ready to test free agent market

During the Detroit Lions‘ annual process of cleaning out their lockers of their practice facility in Allen Park, guard Larry Warford went through the usual cliches of saying how much he loves playing in Detroit, that he’d love to be back, he loves his teammates and coaches, and so on.

But his rookie contract has just been completed. Should the situation arise, it sounds like he’s ready to test free agency.

“I have my family to think about, too,” Warford explained during his interview. “I’m starting up a family, so that’s going to factor in. There are going to be a lot of factors in it, but I’m not thinking too much about it right now.”

“I just want to get my mind off of football for a while, recharge and get ready to hit this offseason pretty good.”

Warford also said that Lions GM Bob Quinn hasn’t given him any kind of indication on what his plans are.

“I mean, I’m not going to get too far into that,” Warford said. “That’s one thing I never want to get too caught up in, is the business side of the NFL. That’s not for me. I’ll just go ahead and tell you right now, that’s not my cup of tea. All I want to do is play football and block three-techniques.”

Should Warford depart Detroit, Quinn would have options. He can look to add through free agency, or start next season with a combo of Graham Glasgow, Joe Dahl, and Laken Tomlinson.

In his 2013 rookie year with the Lions, Warford immediately started at right guard, and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year by ProFootballFocus that season. He started 15 games for Detroit this season and has played in 57 career games for the Honolulu Blue.
