Lions’ James Houston: The ‘Micah Parsons-like’ Pass Rusher

Detroit Lion's James Houston to be “more dangerous” in 2023

James Houston, one of the most disruptive pass rushers in the NFL, is set to be even more dangerous in 2023, according to his personal pass rush coach. Despite starting the year on the Detroit Lions practice squad, Houston finished the 2022 season with eight sacks and 13 quarterback pressures.

Why it matters:

  • Houston is a versatile player who can play off the ball, inside, and outside
  • He is being compared to Micah Parsons, a Dallas Cowboys' defender who is a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year
  • Houston's unique pass rush ability, similar to Parsons', is expected to be a valuable asset for the Lions' defense

James Houston By the Numbers:

  • Houston played 140 defensive snaps in 7 games
  • Finished with 8 sacks, second among all rookies
  • 13 quarterback pressures

What they're saying:

  • “He can play off the ball, he can play inside, he can play outside, and I think the next step, I believe, for where Detroit is, find ways to get him off the ball, use him as a weapon, as a Swiss Army knife,” said Chuck Smith, a private coach who trains some of the NFL's best defensive ends.

The Bottom Line:

Houston's versatility and pass-rush ability are valuable assets for the Lions' defense. As he continues to refine his skills and understanding of the team's scheme, he is expected to have a bigger role next fall and a high ceiling for production in Year 2.
