Lions Leftovers: Defense shines in win over Chicago Bears

Lions Leftovers is the weekly post-game commentary from Detroit Sports Nation contributor Rob Otto. The opinions are his own, and not necessarily those of Detroit Sports Nation.

The Detroit Lions doubled-up the Chicago Bears on Saturday 20-10. It was one of those rare games where Detroit lead from start to finish and felt in control from the opening snap to the final gun.

The biggest reason for that was the defense. After getting burned by the Chicago running attack in their first meeting, Teryl Austin dialed up a perfect game plan to stuff the Bears at the line.

Chicago ended the game with just 43 yards, more than 75 yards below their season average.

The Lions D also sacked rookie Mitchell Trubisky twice and intercepted him three times. That includes one in the end zone by Quandre Diggs.

And a pair by Darius Slay, including the clincher late in the game.

The big plays were necessary, because Trubisky actually threw for 314 yards, most in a single game in his young career.

On the other side of the ball, Detroit was pretty pedestrian. Matthew Stafford was efficient, completing 25-of-33 passes, but only had 237 yards.  It’s the fifth time he was held to 250 yards or less through the air.

However, it was enough for the victory, and to keep Detroit’s slim playoff hopes alive.

The biggest worry for the Lions after this game was the number of injuries they suffered.
