The Detroit Lions made a handful of expected, but still significant, roster moves heading into their matchup with the Los Angeles Rams, highlighted by placing standout safety Brian Branch on injured reserve.
Branch suffered a torn Achilles in last week’s win over the Cowboys, and the team confirmed Saturday that his season is officially over. It’s a brutal loss for a defense that leans heavily on his versatility, physicality, and playmaking instincts.
But with bad news came a few necessary adjustments.

Detroit announced four moves on Saturday:
- S Brian Branch → Placed on IR
- TE Shane Zylstra → Activated from IR to 53-man roster
- S Erick Hallett → Elevated from practice squad
- TE Giovanni Ricci → Elevated from practice squad
The return of Shane Zylstra brings a familiar face back into the offense, and his ability to contribute both as a blocker and a red-zone option could give Detroit a small boost at tight end. Meanwhile, Erick Hallett provides needed depth in the secondary with Branch now sidelined, and Giovanni Ricci steps in to help round out the tight end room.
Losing Branch is unquestionably a big blow, but the Lions are doing what resilient teams do, adjusting on the fly and trusting the next man up.
Detroit’s playoff push continues, and now it’ll be up to the reshuffled roster to hold things down.
