Lions rookie Bo Scarbrough on his NFL debut: “We lost”

Former Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough spent time with the practice squads of the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Seattle Seahawks before finally making his NFL debut with the Detroit Lions on Saturday against Dallas.

He had been released by the Seahawks at the end of August before being signed to the Lions practice squad on November 6; he was signed to the active roster only a day before his debut.

And while one’s first official NFL action is usually a momentous event, Scarbrough looked at the big picture, saying he wasn’t happy about his debut because of the final result.

“Look at the score: We lost,” Scarbrough said after the game, “so the touchdown really don’t mean nothing to me. It’s just another score on the board for us to get ahead. But if we can contribute and win, it’d be different.”

Of course, he’d have every reason to be satisfied with himself. He scored a touchdown and also ran for 55 yards on 14 carries. He’s thankful for the opportunity to finally showcase his skills under the bright lights, but isn’t getting too far ahead of himself.

“It’s something that I expected,” Scarbrough said. “I’ve been doing this a long time. It’s just that Matty P gave me the opportunity, and I want to thank him for giving me the opportunity, but it’s something that I’ve always done. It’s nothing surprising or anything to be proud of. It’s just another opportunity, another day.”

Patricia attested to Scarbrough’s hard work and making the most of his opportunity.

“I think he’s been working really hard since we got him,” Lions coach Matt Patricia said after Sunday’s game. “He’s a big back. He comes downhill, and some of things that we saw, we wanted to give him that opportunity to go out there and show us what he could do. I thought he ran hard, thought he showed the physical part of the run game that was good for us to see.”
